Post-trip: Rylee Struve
For as long as I can remember, I've been passionate about environmental sustainability. I've done things, big and small, throughout my life that reflect this, like becoming a vegetarian or educating friends and family on how to live more sustainably.
Recently, though, I've not been performing actions that reflect this, at least to the extent that I should. The end of the school year had me slumped, and I didn't care about anything other than getting good grades. This followed me into summer break, and without school to focus on, I was sitting around all day doing nothing.
The GELS program has helped me break out of this mindset. I got to be outside in such a beautiful environment, which made me realize how much I've been neglecting my environment.
I found that anywhere we went, whether at the top of a volcano or just a quick stop on the side of the road, I could appreciate the world's beauty. Hawai'i is unique, and its environment is like no other place in the world, but it still made me realize that beauty can be found anywhere you go. This made me start to try to make plans with friends and family to go hiking or camping, something out in nature to get away and appreciate the earth.
Another thing this program has inspired me to do is get more involved in my community. Kiholo Bay was such a unique experience that helped me open my eyes. Seeing a community come together to try and make the world a better place, even if it was just small tasks, was amazing. I don't see this kind of community where I live very often. Being there for just a few hours inspired me to get involved in my community and start volunteering in my free time. Even if it's only a couple of hours a week, coming together really makes a difference.
The final thing I wanted to say was how amazing the people on this trip were. It was really cool to see how much everyone has changed throughout the week. It's wild for me to think that just last Saturday, the group was made up of strangers and now close friends. Thank you to all of the instructors for putting this together. I know it couldn't have been easy, but I'm so thankful you did because this was incredible.
